The Government’s proposals for reforming adoption aim to tackle the key problems with the adoption process, particularly the time taken for children to be adopted. In 2012, children waited an average of 21 months between their coming into care and being placed with an adoptive family – this is considered necessary grounds for change. The Government also acknowledges the difficulty of finding enough adoptive parents, and has proposed a number of changes that aim to encourage and support potential adopters.
